Bigger isn't better. Here's the right power supply for each RTX 50 / RX 9000 build - the wattage you actually need (not the biggest number), ATX 3.1 and the 12V-2x6 connector explained plainly, and how to make sure nothing melts.

How much wattage do you actually need?

The honest rule beats the fear-driven one. Add your GPU's rated power to your CPU's, add ~50-100W for the rest, and leave headroom for the sub-millisecond spikes modern GPUs draw - which lands you at roughly 1.5-2x the GPU's power. ATX 3.1 and the 12V-2x6 connector - do you even need it?

If your GPU uses the 16-pin power connector (broadly RTX 5070 Ti and up, and some RX 9070 XT cards), you want a PSU with a native 12V-2x6 cable. 12V-2x6 is the fixed successor to the melt-prone 12VHPWR: the cable is identical and backward-compatible, but the sense pins are shorter, so the card won't pull full power unless the plug is fully seated - directly targeting the partially-seated-plug problem behind most melting. To stay safe: push until it clicks (on Corsair's native cables, no grey should be visible), use the native cable, not the GPU's adapter, and don't put a hard bend right at the connector. Lower-tier cards (5060/5070 class) still use regular 8-pins and don't need to worry about this.

Efficiency: 80+ Gold is the floor

80+ Gold is the 2026 value sweet spot - the jump to Platinum or Titanium is only a few percent efficiency and rarely pays back the premium. For a stricter, real-world measure, look at the Cybenetics rating: its ETA grade (efficiency) is tested at a hotter, more realistic ambient, and its LAMBDA grade is a noise measure 80+ doesn't provide. A quality 80+ Gold with a good Cybenetics ETA and an A-/A LAMBDA is a quiet, efficient unit.

What wattage PSU do I need for a gaming PC in 2026?

Add your GPU's rated power to your CPU's, plus ~50-100W for the board, RAM, drives and fans, then leave headroom for transient spikes - in practice, a PSU rated roughly 1.5-2x the GPU's power lands in the efficiency sweet spot. By GPU: an RTX 5060 Ti / RX 9060 XT or RTX 5070 wants 650W, an RTX 5070 Ti / RX 9070 XT wants 750W, an RTX 5080 wants 850W, and an RTX 5090 wants 1000W (1200W if you overclock). Don't just buy the biggest number - match the tier and add one step.

What wattage PSU for an RTX 5090, 5080 or 5070?

RTX 5090: 1000W minimum (NVIDIA's own figure), and a 1200W unit is the safer pick because the card spikes far above its 575W rating for microseconds. RTX 5080: 850W. RTX 5070 Ti: 750W. RTX 5070: 650W. These are the recommended figures with headroom for transients; going much higher just wastes money.

Is ATX 3.1 worth it, or is ATX 3.0 fine?

A good ATX 3.0 unit from a reputable line is still fine, but if the price gap is small, take ATX 3.1 - it mandates the improved 12V-2x6 connector and slightly tighter transient handling. For a new RTX 50-series build, ATX 3.1 with a native 12V-2x6 cable is the sensible default. What matters far more than 3.0 vs 3.1 is buying a quality unit at the right wattage.

What is 12V-2x6, and how is it different from 12VHPWR?

12V-2x6 is the fixed successor to the 12VHPWR GPU-power connector that had melting issues. The cable is the same and fully backward-compatible - only the socket changed: the sense pins are shorter, so the GPU won't draw full power unless the plug is fully seated, and it shuts down if the connection is compromised. That directly targets the partially-seated-plug problem behind most melting. Buy a PSU with a native 12V-2x6 cable rather than relying on an adapter.

Is 80 Plus Gold enough for a gaming PC?

Yes - 80+ Gold is the 2026 value sweet spot. The efficiency gain from Gold to Platinum or Titanium is only a few percent and rarely pays back the price premium; Platinum/Titanium mainly buy marginally less heat and noise. For most gamers, a quality 80+ Gold (ideally with a strong Cybenetics ETA and a good LAMBDA noise grade) is the right target.

Can a PSU be too powerful - is a bigger PSU bad?

Bigger isn't better past the point of sensible headroom. PSU efficiency peaks around 50% load, so a unit sized so your gaming load lands near half its rating runs coolest and quietest. A 1200W unit feeding a 5070 is money wasted and can sit in a less efficient part of its curve at idle. Match your GPU tier, add one step for overclocking or future-proofing, and stop.

Will my 12V-2x6 cable melt, and how do I prevent it?

Melting almost always traces to a partially-seated plug creating high resistance on a few pins. 12V-2x6's shorter sense pins mitigate this, but you should still push the connector until it clicks (on Corsair's native cables, make sure no grey is visible on the plug), use the PSU's native cable rather than the GPU's adapter, and avoid a hard bend right at the connector. Done right, it's safe.

Are PSU prices affected by the 2026 memory shortage?

No - power supplies contain no memory, so the DRAM/NAND shortage that inflated RAM, SSDs and GPUs doesn't touch them. There's some mild upward pressure from metal tariffs and lower build volumes, but the PSU is one of the least-inflated parts of a 2026 build. It's also the worst place to cheap out - a failing no-name unit can damage everything else.
