16 GB VRAM just passed 8 GB on Steam — narrowly

Valve's July 2026 survey marks the first month 16 GB is the most common VRAM capacity among PC gamers. The margin is half a percentage point, and that matters as much as the crossover.

For the first time, 16 GB is the most common amount of graphics memory among systems in Valve's Steam Hardware Survey. It sits at 25.90% against 8 GB's 25.32% — a lead of 0.58 of a percentage point.

That margin is the story as much as the crossover is. This is a voluntary opt-in survey with no published sample size and no margin of error, so a gap of half a point is a direction of travel, not a measurement. What makes it credible is the shape around it: 16 GB rose +1.40 points in a single month while 8 GB fell -0.32 and 6 GB fell -0.80. The survey reports shares, not purchases — it cannot say why a share moved, only that it did, and the movement is consistently in one direction.

The split that actually matters

Ranking 16 GB against 8 GB makes a tidy headline, but it compares two exact capacities and ignores everything between them. The more useful cut is whether a card has enough memory to avoid a wall at all: at least 48.65% of surveyed systems have 12 GB or more, against at least 47.24% at 8 GB or less. Both are floors rather than totals — Valve's "Other" row is 1.36% of GPUs with no stated capacity, so it belongs to neither side.

That is still close to an even split, and it is why 8 GB cards keep shipping: a very large installed base is still on them, so games remain playable there. It is also why buying one new in 2026 is a different decision from owning one — you are joining the half of the market that developers optimise down to, not the half they build for. Worth being precise about what the survey can and cannot settle: it measures what people own, not what performs well. A card bought in 2021 counts exactly as much as one bought last week. 8-CPU systems also passed 6

The same survey shows systems reporting 8 CPUs becoming the most common class at 27.85%, ahead of 6 at 27.52%. The gap is about a third of a point — tied, in practice, with 8 rising and 6 drifting down. Valve labels this table "Physical CPUs" and its rows "N cpus"; we keep that wording rather than translating it into core counts, which would be our reading of their measurement.

For gaming specifically this changes less than it looks. Core count stopped being the limiting factor for most titles some generations ago; cache and single-thread speed decide gaming frame rates, which is why an 8-core X3D part beats a 16-core non-X3D one in games. What we would change in a build because of this

Honestly: nothing. Our build guides already default to 16 GB-VRAM cards and 8-core-class CPUs, and they did before this survey. A market-share crossover is confirmation, not new information — if a survey result would have changed our recommendation, the recommendation was being made on the wrong evidence.

The one place it genuinely informs a decision is resale and longevity. An 8 GB card is now on the losing side of a trend that has been consistent for years, which shortens how long it stays comfortable and how well it holds value. Common questions

Do most PC gamers now have 16 GB of VRAM?

No — most do not. In Valve's July 2026 Steam Hardware Survey, 16 GB became the single most common VRAM capacity at 25.90%, passing 8 GB at 25.32%. But "most common" is not "most": roughly three quarters of surveyed systems have something other than 16 GB, and the two leaders are separated by 0.58 of a percentage point. It is a crossover, not a landslide.

Is 8 GB of VRAM still enough for gaming in 2026?

For 1080p with settings management, often yes. The Steam survey does not answer that question — it measures what people own, not what performs well, and a card bought in 2021 still counts. What the survey does show is the direction of travel: 8 GB is falling while 12 GB and above are rising, so an 8 GB card bought today is being bought into a shrinking share of the installed base that developers optimise for.

How many gamers have 12 GB of VRAM or more?

At least 48.65% of surveyed systems, against at least 47.24% at 8 GB or less. Both are floors: Valve’s "Other" row (1.36%) states no capacity, so it counts toward neither. That is the more useful split than the 16-versus-8 headline, because it groups cards by whether they hit a VRAM wall rather than by exact capacity.

How many CPUs do most gamers have?

In Valve's "Physical CPUs" table, systems reporting 8 CPUs are now the most common at 27.85%, narrowly ahead of 6 at 27.52% — a gap of about a third of a percentage point. Both are far ahead of 4 at 13.12%. As with VRAM, the honest reading is that the two leaders are effectively tied and the trend, not the ranking, is the story.

Is the Steam Hardware Survey reliable?

It is the best public dataset on PC gaming hardware, and it is still a voluntary opt-in survey of Steam clients rather than a census. Valve publishes neither a sample size nor a margin of error, and the sample skews toward whoever accepts the prompt — including regional internet-café fleets, which have visibly moved single months in the past. Treat multi-point moves as real and few-tenths gaps as noise.
